I have a bachelor’s degree in political science/pre-law and a master’s degree in public services management with public policy concentration. The graduate program is like an MBA program for the public sector. I most recently completed a post-MBA certificate program in auditing because I am interested in it as a career. However, I’ve taken various accounting and business classes at the local community college since I finished my graduate degree program. I am taking a tax course now. I need 4 more semester hours in business to sit for the CPA exam in Illinois. I started the process to sit for the Certified Internal Auditor exam, and I’d like to get the Cert. Government Auditing Professional designation, too. The CPA designation will be more universal, though. I really want to get out of my current career in social services and get into doing some auditing work. I liked social services but am getting tired of making no money and getting yelled at by people who make more and get welfare. Is not having an accounting degree hurting my chances? I have no audit experience. Would having a credential be best? I can’t spend any more money on school…and don’t want to. Does anyone think I could get an entry level job now in auditing (maybe with a small CPA firm that does municipal audits, nonprofit audits, etc.). Just wondering about your thoughts…
